The Reality

Why Accounting Practices Plateau —
Even When the Work is Excellent

The Billable Hours Trap

When revenue depends entirely on time traded for money, growth hits a ceiling. Scaling the practice means scaling the hours — and there’s only so many of those to go around.

Client Concentration Risk

Many practices carry significant revenue risk from a small number of key clients. One departure can shift the entire P&L. Sustainable practices build broad, loyal client relationships across multiple service lines.

Team Turnover & Culture

Attracting and keeping great people in accounting is harder than ever. Without a strong culture, clear growth pathways and real leadership, your best staff walk out the door — taking client relationships with them.

"To know and not to do, is not to know."

Most accountants know exactly what a healthy business looks like. They advise on it
every day. The challenge is applying that same rigour to their own practice — and
that's exactly where the First Class Accountants Program comes in.

Our Approach

We Help You Apply to Your Own Practice What You Already Know

The 7 Business Drivers™ — identified by Peter Fuller and adapted for the accounting profession — give you a complete strategic framework for building a practice that’s resilient, profitable and genuinely rewarding to run.

Working with Belief First means working with a coach who understands business at every level — from the boardroom to the balance sheet. We bring structure, accountability and an outside perspective to unlock what’s possible for your firm.

We bring the questions. You bring the answers. Together, we build the plan.

Strategic Clarity

A clear picture of where your practice is, where it’s headed and exactly what needs to change to get there.

Operational Efficiency

Systems and processes that free you from being the bottleneck — so the practice can run and grow without burning you out.

Sustainable Growth

More clients, stronger retention, new service lines and a team culture that makes it all possible.

The Framework

The 7 Business Drivers™ for Accounting Practices

Seven interconnected levers that, when working together, determine the health, growth and value of your practice. Most firms are strong on one or two. World-class practices work all seven.

1. Driver One

YOU — The Accountant

Your personal well-being, alignment with your career goals and life balance directly influence your professional performance and the culture within your firm. Leadership starts with you — your mindset, your health, your vision.

Key question: Are you running your practice by design, or by default?

2. Driver Two

LEADERSHIP — Setting the Direction

Partners and senior accountants are the cultural architects of the firm. Strong leadership means transparent communication, strategic alignment, genuine team-building and the ability to navigate conflict before it becomes costly.

Key question: Does your leadership team actively shape the firm’s culture, or just react to it?

3. Driver Three

EMPLOYEES — Your Team First

Engaged staff provide better client service, stay longer and bring others with them. Prioritising professional development, clear goal communication and recognition of achievement transforms your firm’s culture — and your bottom line.

Key question: Would your best staff members describe this as the best firm they’ve worked for?

4. Driver Four

CUSTOMERS — Your Clients

Clients are the cornerstone of everything. Repeat business, referrals and long-term loyalty all flow from strong relationships, proactive communication and genuinely personalised advice. A client-centric practice grows on its reputation alone.

Key question: Are your clients staying because they’re locked in, or because they genuinely can’t imagine going anywhere else?

05. Driver Five

FINANCIAL PARTNERS — Your Ecosystem

Banks, software vendors, referral partners and professional networks all impact the financial health and growth capability of your practice. Managing these relationships proactively — not just reactively — is a competitive advantage.

Key question: Are your key partners actively working with you, or just transacting with you?

06. Driver Six

CASH — Financial Management

Ironically, many accounting practices run poor internal cash management. Efficient accounts receivable, smart billing processes and appropriate pricing are the foundations of a practice that can invest, grow and weather downturns.

Key question: Does your practice run with the same financial discipline you’d recommend to a client?

7. Driver Seven

GROWTH — Business Development

Growth isn’t just about more clients — it’s about better clients, broader services, stronger systems and a team that’s capable of delivering on what you promise. Understanding market trends, exploring niche markets and leveraging technology are the strategies that build competitive advantage for the long haul.

Key question: Is your practice growing because of a deliberate strategy, or because of luck and word of mouth?

How It Works

A Structured Process.
Real Results.

Belief First isn’t a course or a one-off workshop. It’s a coaching engagement that builds clarity, accountability and capability inside your firm — step by step.

Discovery

We map where your practice currently sits across all 7 Drivers — honestly and without judgment. This gives us a clear baseline and highlights your biggest opportunities.

Strategy

We co-design a 12-month roadmap tailored to your firm — with clear goals, priorities and the “why” that keeps your team motivated when execution gets hard.

Execution

We work alongside you and your team to implement the plan — with regular coaching sessions, accountability checkpoints and real-time problem solving.

Momentum

Ongoing coaching and access to Catipult.ai for automated tracking and reminders ensures the gains stick and the practice keeps improving long after the formal program ends.

Strategic & Operational Planning Programs

Depending on your needs, we deploy either our 8-Step Strategic Planning Process — for firms that
need to set direction — or our 10-Step Operational Planning Process — for firms that need to
improve execution. Many clients use both.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. While the 7 Business Drivers™ framework applies broadly, the program for accounting practices is specifically adapted to the realities of running a firm — billable hours, client retention, staff culture, partner dynamics and practice management. Paul also has a background in Accounting, so the conversation starts at a more informed level than typical business coaching.

The 8-Step Strategic Planning Process focuses on setting direction — where the firm is going, what it stands for, and the big moves that will get it there. The 10-Step Operational Planning Process focuses on execution — how to implement strategy through clear tasks, accountability and timelines. Many clients benefit from both, delivered in sequence.

We build the program around your practice’s real capacity. Initial workshops are structured to be efficient and focused — typically half-day sessions with key stakeholders. Ongoing coaching sessions are monthly, with check-ins in between as needed. You won’t be pulled away from client work for weeks at a time.

At minimum, the Principal, partners and senior leaders. The more decision-makers in the room early, the faster things move. For operational planning, we also recommend involving key department heads so the plan is grounded in operational reality, not just leadership assumptions.

Engagement scope and fees are discussed on the Discovery Call, tailored to your firm’s size and needs. Start with a free 15-minute call to determine whether there’s a fit — there’s no cost and no obligation.

You get ongoing access to Paul for coaching support, plus Catipult.ai for automated progress tracking, accountability reminders and performance insights. The goal is that the framework becomes embedded in how your practice operates — not something that fades six months after the engagement ends.
